Rt. Hon. Ibrahima meets Vice President Opoku-Agyemang on sidelines of ECOWAS Parliament session in Accra
Accra, Ghana — The Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, Rt. Hon. Hajia Memounatou Ibrahima, has held an audience with the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, on the sidelines of the ongoing 2026 Second Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament and Second 2026 Parliamentary Seminar in Accra.
In a statement after the meeting, Ibrahima said she was honoured to be received by the Vice President and expressed deep gratitude for her availability and for the important speech she delivered at the opening of the proceedings.
The ECOWAS Speaker paid warm tribute to President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana, saying Ghana’s decision to entrust the vice presidency to a woman sends a powerful message to the entire region.
“By entrusting the vice presidency to a woman, Ghana sends a powerful message to our entire region: that Africa believes in women’s leadership. Her journey is an inspiration to millions of young girls,” Ibrahima said.
She said discussions with the Vice President focused on the 25th anniversary of the ECOWAS Parliament and its core mandates: issuing opinions on matters referred to it, examining the Commission’s budget, and conducting oversight missions.
The two leaders also addressed two issues of great importance to young people in the community: the harmonisation of curricula and the mutual recognition of diplomas across ECOWAS member states.
Ibrahima said ensuring that a graduate from Lomé, Abuja or Dakar has their skills recognised in Accra would bring free movement to life and help build a true ECOWAS of the Peoples.
She extended sincere thanks to the Ghanaian authorities for their warm welcome and the excellent organisation of the session.
The meeting underscored the ECOWAS Parliament’s continued engagement with regional leaders as it marks its 25th anniversary and advances integration priorities, including youth mobility and academic recognition across West Africa.
